Death's River Reviews
Once again, the metal mavens at Punishment 18 Records deliver us from boring, contrived metal. Enter Windsor, Ontario’s own thrash masters Arkayic Revolt and their full length debut record, Death’s River.
Now, anybody who’s ever read Gary Holt’s thrash metal cookbook, Force Of Fricasseed Rabbit, knows the recipe for a baddass metal album that feeds six to eight thousand ravenous thrashers: tight riffs, catchy chorus, gang vocals, ‘tude by the tons and awesome album art. Arkayic Revolt must of read that one cover to cover because they whipped up batches upon batches of all of that in Death’s River. This album is classic thrash metal with no frills or ultra slick mastering. It’s down and dirty and emanates a nostalgic aroma of the 80’s style of destructive thrash, just like grandma used to make!
Overall: Mid to photon phast thrash metal in the vein of Impact Is Imminent era Exodus and The Legacy era Testament, with a hardy glaze of Metallica‘s heyday. If you dig the more approachable size of old school thrash, then Death’s River is juuuuuust right for you!
…ok, new rule: No writing reviews on an empty stomach! When’s Echidna gonna make my damn supper!?
Undead Man Walking Reviews
Arkayic Revolt, remember this name, cause this band can really become the big. They're one of few new bands that not only make can play and have great musicians, but they also have some absolute killer songs. Actually thats what set this band apart from many other bands, they're songwriting is sublime.
The cd starts of with an accoustic piece named "The setting of the fifth sun", which in many ways starts a journey to climax. The whole accoustic intro explodes into the blistering thrasher "Maniacal Infestation". A furious oldschool thrasher with some amazing melodious vocal parts that makes me think of some of the better work done by the likes of Testament and Anthrax. The next song on the cd "Tread the blade", shows a more hardcore side of the band with some amazing choruses, accopanied by some really heavy riffs. The next in line is "Overthrow" that kinda reminds me of some of the better stuff done by the NWOBHM movement, mixed with the agression and 'fuck you' mentallity of the bay area 80's thrash scene. "Undead Man Walking" sends the listener into the universe of tecnhothrash (aka Coroner) mixed with some amazing melodious parts that makes this song one of the absoulute highlights on the cd. "Crossing Over" takes us back to the opening song, with some nice accoustic guitar parts that explodes into the last song on the cd "Immortal Visions". This is yet another reminder that the band is among the bands to be reckoned with in the future. Tight, fast and heavy riffs, accompanied by a vocalist that knows how to use his voice.
And just in case you wonder, even though Metallica's "Death Magnetic" was a step in the right direction for that band, this offering from Arkayic Revolt crushes everything Metallica has done for the last 20 years. If you are into Thrash, you will love this band!
Thrash Metal, when looking back through the history pages of the last 20 years, was the "Arkayic", old, "Revolt" against Glam Metal in the US. It stood against everything that the colorful silky, smooth Glam nation presented. It is unknown if this Canadian group, from the Thrash / Speed state of Ontario, thought about that idea, if not it is still a rather good history lesson. Arkayic Revolt are a fairly new, being formed last year, Old School Thrash Metal act that produce their Thrash in the veins of early Metallica, Exodus and Testament. Of course, you can add more to the list but these are the main acts that come to mind. Undead Man Walking is one more player in the new revival plan of Old School Thrash Metal, a course which is under development since 2000. Following the giant charging wave of Thrash Metal from the US, the Canadian Thrash Metal scene didn’t stay far behind and raised its own new Thrash Metal bands, delivering the preaching of “Old School Or No School”. This new EP, by the Arkayics came forth pretty fast for a young band that just started its journey, their eagerness and determination to create and release was high enough to unleash this baby. Undead Man Walking , unlike many debuts from bands this young, has a big explosive production , which makes it almost the same quality as the production of the big boys of Thrash Metal. Regarding their music, there is nothing to be surprised about or to be astonished from, yet they created a quantity of songs, which will blow you away like: “Maniacal Infestation”, which also appeared on W.Y.AT, the self titled track, “Overthrow” and “Tread The Blade”. These tracks present pure Thrash Metal in its finest moments: The vocals are purely derived from James Hetfield of Metallica, its indefinite if it was an intentional mean or not, yet it sounds good and even brutal sometimes. The riffs are destructive and heavy as hell with the newly found Thrash tuning of drop D guitars , the solos are Metallica influenced , you can perceive the same in the instrumentals , yet they don’t live up to any sort of expectations. Something bothersome is the last track, “Immortal Vision”. This track, unlike the ones prior to it, does not seem to fit this release or any of the band’s songs on the album. It sounds like a modern type of Metalcore or something that definitely does not sound like the Thrash Metal the Arkayics try to present here. Moreover, it is too long and the rhythm in the middle of it is tiresome. The one thing that serves this one right is its chorus, nothing more than that – the chorus itself does not have the Old School vibe in it, yet its quite enjoyable. Whether you like Metallica or Exodus or Testament or if you are fond of them all , this band is for you. Check these guys out, you never know if they will be landing a full-length soon.
